Who’s the boss?
Are you sitting in the power position and driving the business, or are you being challenged with staffing issues, lack of leadership, deals lost, or maybe health issues for yourself and the company? You may be at your wit’s end and looking to find a solution, or at least get a lucky break?
What if I told you to “have your back up against the wall” – literally? This is the first step you can take to place yourself in a position that supports you with your role of authority and leadership responsibilities.
Leadership makes or breaks an organisation. So leaders need to be positioned to oversee the organisation, have privacy and be supported in their immediate space to perform their job role to the best of their ability. In other words, “drive the ship”.
Many leaders think it is fashionable to have open-plan offices where CEOs, COOs and CFOs sit amongst their people. While this has some great benefits in building one-on-one and team relationships. After interviewing and working with the staff, I have found that the line is too fine not only from the staff’s perspective but also from the management’s perspective.
Who is controlling or leading who?
The ‘drivers of the ship’ need to be strategically placed in a power position from a physical and energetic perspective. The 8 Mansions School of Feng Shui derives their energy map through the compass directions and determines whether a person belongs to the East or West Group.
Within both of these groups, there are four positive directions and four not so positive directions. Placing a CEO in the correct position and having their desk in front of a solid wall with a clear view of the team will support them energetically.
Often when I have someone turn their desk around so that the wall is behind them, they will tell me – Wow, I cannot believe how much more supported I feel and productive I have become!
Solving Staff Challenges
One of my first corporate jobs was working with a manager within a large company. Her desk was in an open-plan space with approximately 50 plus staff on the one floor. She was having a dreadful time with one particular staff member who continually undermined her position and built negativity amongst other staff.
The staff all sat in a pod with their backs facing each other. Interestingly, the staff member challenging the manager had a map of a bull’s eye taped to their computer. I knew who their target was! So we turned the manager’s desk around with her back to the pod wall division breaker, to face the staff member. This particular staff member had not had a day’s sick leave for approximately a year. After one day of the manager sitting in this new position, the staff member rang in sick the following morning.
Power Positions in the Boardroom
Board meetings can be daunting enough without worrying about where you sit. Have you ever arrived late and ended up sitting with your back to the entrance to a boardroom? How did that feel?
The thing is, if you knew where to sit so that you could have a harmonious and productive meeting with a positive outcome, wouldn’t you want to know how to determine your best position?
The 8 Mansions Feng Shui Energy Map can be applied to your boardroom. Learn where best to position yourself depending on what is on the agenda – whether for the closing of a deal, connecting the creative minds around the table, or determining an outcome with a staffing issue.
You see, it is all about learning how to align yourself and your people with the flow of energy within a space. Energy is POWERFUL. It’s hard to grasp as you cannot see energy, but we all know what a difference it can make when you get it right. A slight shift can make a HUGE difference.
